L’agroforestazione (agroforestry) è l’insieme dei sistemi agricoli nei quali la coltivazione di specie arboree e/o arbustive perenni sono consociate a seminativi e/o pascoli, nella stessa unità di superficie. Se a metà del secolo scorso, nei Paesi ad agricoltura intensiva, tali sistemi sono stati cancellati dalla meccanizzazione e dalla monocoltura, oggi si ritorna a parlare e a piantare alberi nei campi coltivati.

Non si tratta di un acritico ritorno al passato, ma di coniugare, nei contesti produttivi moderni gli innegabili vantaggi che questi sistemi offrono al territorio e all’impresa rurale: incrementi produttivi sinergici, diversificazione, stabilizzazione microclimatica, aumento della biodiversità, miglioramento della qualità dell’acqua e delle altre risorse naturali, stoccaggio del carbonio, qualificazione del paesaggio, ecc.

Importanti progetti come AgForward hanno analizzato i sistemi agroforestali più efficaci nel contesto europeo e la stessa Rete dei Partenariati Europei dell’Innovazione (PEI-AGRI) ha dedicato uno specifico Focus-group a questa tematica.

In tutti queste iniziative, significativa è stata la presenza italiana e veneta che viene oggi presentata in questo convegno dal respiro internazionale.

THE RETURN OF AGROFORESTRY SYSTEMS

Agroforestry is the practice of deliberately integrating woody vegetation (trees or shrubs) with crop and/or animal systems to benefit from the resulting ecological and economic interactions. Since the middle of XXth Century agriculture has become more intensive with an high degree of mechanization and crops-livestock specialization. Therefore more complex systems, such as “agroforestry”, were rapidly abandoned. However, a new approach to farming seems to re-discover agroforestry. The reintroduction of this old farming system in modern food production allows to obtain several benefits: an increasing in yields due to the interaction between crops and trees or shrubs and livestock, products diversification, a more stabilized microclimate, improved soil fertility and environment biodiversity, a better quality of ground water, a more efficient carbon stocking and an higher landscape value. Recent scientific investigations (made possible by EU funded projects such as AFINET and AGFORWARD) produced interesting results analysing different agroforestry systems, and the EU partnership for innovation in agriculture (EIP-AGRI) supported a focus group of experts on this subject. Institutions of  Italy and Veneto contributed actively with scientific and demonstrative actions. Some of these actions and results are presented in this meeting.
